Untethered

Pondering Untethered…..

What picture comes to your mind when you think of the word “untethered?” What objects do you see?

When I think of tethered, I think of a ship, being tied to a dock. A ship is built to sail, explore, move through water. A tethered ship idles against design. It’s restrained, contained, bound. What does a ship miss out on if it stays tethered to a dock?

Sure tethered to a dock a ship is “safe” from the storms at sea, but doesn’t the designer of the ship make plans and provision for the rocking and rolling of waves? Didn’t the designer take into account tossing and tipping from the wind? If the ship stays tethered it’s “safe,” but it misses out on the adventure it was designed for.

Untethered would then mean making an exchange. From “safe” to design. From predictable to adventure. From fear to trust.

Reflect on this today. What is keeping you tethered? What is keeping you bound in fear? What would untethering to sail with trust look like for you?

Listening Prayer: Lord, You know the depths of my heart, the places in my inner-world where I’m bound. What does it look like to do something different today, to take one step out of “safe” and into trust? What do You want me to know about this? I believe Lord that You long for me to trust You. I want that too. Take me deeper, untether me, move me into design. I am listening Father.
